Today we are opening a new section: the profile section! For DAY 1 we are gonna introduce you to Hedy Lamarr.

Born in Vienna in 1914, of a Romanian mother and Ukrainian father, Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, who will become Hedy Lamarr. She develops a passion for cinema and quickly became a famous and scandalous Hollywood actress. She was recognized for her beauty and actress skills but she was also talented scientist! In fact she spent her time creating all kind of things. She is known for developing a frenquency switch system capable to guide a torpedo. It is a transmission principle still used for satellite positioning (GPS), encrypted military links, mobile telephony or Wi-Fi.

However, when she offers her technology to the military, they didn’t take it seriously. They told her to support the United State by participating in the moral support of the troops using her physical and her statue of woman. It’s only in 1959 that military engineer rediscovered her invention and decided to use this revolutionary technology.

We usually evoke her incredible beauty, but rarely her activities as an inventor and her freedom of speech. She never received money for her invention. Hedy Lamarr is a perfect exemple of the minimization of women and of their achievements in this patriarchal society.
