Inequalities and representation

Hello!
Today we thaugt we could speak about the inequalities we can find between women and men in the scientific world. During our researsh we found some interesting facts we would share with you. Don’t hesitate to let a comment to share your point of view and initiate a debate.

In general and it’s a fact, girls are more hard worker and they are more graduated. But, they won’t follow necessarily a scientific carrer path even if they thaught about it. In high school we have parity beetween girl and boy in the scientific classes but only 25% are gonna continue to a PhD. The unesco statistics show that only 30% of the biology searchers are womans. We were shocked when we  red that only 15 women have ever been rewarded against 558 men in medicine, chemistry and physics.

Why? There is so many answers!

The stereotypes: They are still present even if it’s changing in a good way. In history so many clichés have been created. The woman raising the childs, waiting for their husband to come back from their job… But sciences were rarely associated with woman at this time. They would have also less abilities to work in sciences. It is so wrong!  Nothing is programmed at birth, brain plasticity is behind our capacities. Hopfully, today, we are open all those carrer to the women but there is still a lot of prejudices to fight. In fact the women work more in the relational sciences like teachers, doctors than men who usually are in robotic, mathematics, physics…

For exemple in this picture, ok they promote the fact that woman can work in sciences but they also gather so many clichés! The color pink, the lipstick and the pose, it destroy to me the main idea wich was at first good.

This next video is really interesting, it shows the progress on stereotypes and at what age kids developed them thanks to a study and to be honest it was absolutely not what we were expecting.

The sexism is an other source of prejudice and obstacle to the equality. Still in history men are use to have the position of responsability and some of them are not really open to let woman lead them.

The « Matilda Effect » play a really important role. It is the minimization of the women’s work in a project, discovery or even worst the apropriation of a woman discovery by a man. If you want to know more about it we invite you to read our next article which is going to be dedicated to it.

We also can observe those inequalities in the difference of salary between the two sexes. But we won’t develop this part because it’s really complex and a long debate (maybe in an other article who know…)

We can’t enounce all of them and I certainly forget some of them so don’t hesitate to give us more exemple in the comments.

However a study shows that today, 41% of girl would become a doctor, ingineer to 32% of the boys. So girls what are you looking for?
